The bed is where you sleep, sleep late, curl up with a book, share intimacies, and get over a cold. Unfortunately, the bed is often made of unhealthy materials.
Foam mattresses, pressed wood bed frames, permanent press sheets, electric blankets, bedside clock radios are only a few of the things that can make a night's sleep less than regenerative. Many of these release toxic molecules into the air and contribute to a lowered immune system. Remember, even though your eyes are closed, your nose is open all night.
If you don't do anything else to environmentally retrofit your house, consider outfitting your bed with healthy bedding. Think of it as a second skin: you spend at least six hours a night, seven nights a week, 52 weeks a year in bed.
There are lots of unhealthy bedding choices in the marketplace today. Most bedding is made from cotton grown with pesticides which remain in the sheets even after many washings. Polyester blankets, composed of inorganic plastics do not absorb perspiration and permanent press sheets are treated with formaldehyde and other chemicals.
