Want to recycle and make use of your pets waste? Try the Tumbleweed Pet Poo Converter! No need for chemicals! The Pet Poo Converter is a worm bin which recycles pet droppings into worm castings and liquid manure (compost tea).
Did you know that animal waste is full of pathogens? Animal waste often contains bacteria such as salmonella, e-coli, giardia, and Campylobacter upsaliensis, as well as parasites such as Toxoplasma gondii, hookworms, tapeworms, and roundworms that can pollute the environment, and affect the health of people and their pets. Composting your pet waste is a great way to turn this bacteria into something beneficial for the Earth.
This converter has two sturdy nesting boxes with a lid that forms a neat, compact portable unit convenient to fit in any outdoor space. The worms eat the animal waste and breed in the top box, which allows any liquid to drain through to the bottom box. The worm castings remain in the top box and can be used if desired.
There is no difficulty in getting the worms to eat dog, cat and ferret droppings. These worms must be fed exclusively on dog, cat and ferret poo because other animal waste contains pathogens that can grow in food waste faster than the worms can handle. Just like dogs and cats, worms have a exclusive diet. Kitty litter is not compostable and should not be put in the bin because it can kill the worms. Other animal waste that can be composted includes droppings from rabbits, hedgehogs, prairie dogs, chinchillas, and a few other pets. Animal waste from pure herbivores doesn't require a pet waste composter though. Please do not put kitty litter in the converter because it can kill the worms.
The Pet Poo Converter is designed to minimize odors, but it works even better with high carbon materials to neutralize smells, promote aeration, and act as a buffer to fruit flies and other pests. If you have sawdust, shredded newspaper, corn cobs, or ground cardboard lying around your house these work very well as carbon materials.
Dimensions:

Our Worm Farm comprises of one sturdy polypropylene box and one tray with legs. The upper box has a perforated floor and a lid, and the lower box is fitted with a drain sprout in the bottom center. By having the worms in the top portion of the bin (kitchen scraps/organic waste is placed) the waste (liquid tea) filters through the perforated holes into the bottom tray will drain. A cup or dish can be utilized to catch the liquid organic fertilizer rich in nutrients. As the worms actually eat the bacteria in the decomposed food there is no odor to worry about, simply add your scraps and see the results!
First of all, line the base of the top box with two or three layers of dampened newspaper. Add some partially rotted compost or potting mix, to form a layer about 1-2 inches deep. Add your purchased worms* and cover with a piece of dampened carpet, burlap or light resistant plastic (such as a garbage bag) cut to size. Place the scraps underneath this cover. Note that the worms eat the decomposed parts of the scraps so by placing them in a separate bin for a few days will accelerate the process.
WARNING: when handling animal waste, you should be very careful to avoid exposure to the pathogens.
The Tumbleweed Pet Poo Converter is a worm farm which harnesses the power of nature to recycle pet droppings into worm castings and liquid manure (compost tea). The tea, often referred to by gardeners as 'liquid gold', is highly concentrated and can be mixed one part tea to four parts water. A worm farm that disposes of dog-droppings without the need for chemicals. Harness the power of nature and put it back into your garden!
Worms are used to convert the pet poo into worm castings as an incredibly nutrient-rich soil amendment. Because the worms eat the bacteria, there is no odor. The unit is easy to set up and operate and takes little space. No chemicals are used, and the Tumbleweed Pet Poo Converter comes with comprehensive instructions regarding set-up and use.
The Tumbleweed Pet Poo Converter will handle, on average, the droppings of two medium dogs. However, this will vary with age, diet, exercise and breed of dog. (Think Chihuahua vs. St Bernard). The greater the amount of droppings recycled through the Pet Poo Converter, the quicker the level of castings will build up. The castings can then be easily harvested, as per the instructions, and used around the flower garden or in potting mixes.
*All of these topics and more are explained in detail in a foldout instruction sheet included with each bin.
