Kenyan Sisal Basket

Kenyan Sisal Basket

These beautiful vibrant baskets are handwoven by women's cooperatives located on the edge of Tsavo National Park. These Cooperatives were formed to give the women members a means to attain financial self sufficiency in a very depressed region of Kenya.

While "kiondos" (basket in Kiswahili) were traditionally made from fiber taken from the bark of the Baobab tree, our version is made from tightly woven sisal, which is a sustainable plant that grows throughout Kenya.

Extremely durable, these baskets will take a beating and still look great. The Natural color is undyed natural sisal. The reddish colored basket is dyed using soil and tree bark; the other three colors are dyed using commercial dyes.

Baskets are oval, approx. 12" in diameter.

Note: These kiondos are hand made and slight variation in shape and color are part of their charm.
