![]() What does it mean to clean green?
To clean green means to use products which are all-natural and non-toxic. Many environmentally friendly cleaning products are biodegradable and have ingredients such as plant based enzymes, or are made from citric fruits and natural oils. Great for allergy sufferers or people with sensitivities, most green cleaners are free from dyes, artificial fragrances, irritating chemicals and petroleum products. Another important factor to consider - besides the actual ingredients - is the environmental impact of production. Green Cleaning uses fewer resources to get the same job done, and does it without toxins!
Why is green cleaning important?Proper hygiene supports good health. So why do we accept chemicals, which are detrimental to our health, in our cleaning products? When did the smell of bleach become associated with the smell of clean? Doesn't it seem odd to wear rubber gloves and face masks to make something clean and then have to wash our hands AFTER cleaning...? Change the color of clean to Green! Harmful cleaning agents are UNNECESSARY. Alternatives to traditional, toxic cleaning products are available, affordable, and just as effective, without adverse health effects. It's important to adopt environmentally friendly cleaning options for the health of your family and home, as well as the health of the broader community and ecosystem you live in.Great products we recommend:
Where can I use green cleaning products? It's easy to replace your traditional cleaners with eco-friendly options for every room of the house, including the bathroom, kitchen, living room, bedroom, laundry room, and garage. They're great indoors or outdoors, and most can be used on all surfaces including wood or porous materials.
How does the act of using environmentally friendly cleaning products protect our Earth?
Everything you use in your home eventually ends up in the environment. When things go down the drain they go to a water-treatment plant which removes solid waste and filters out much of the organic waste. However, most chemicals remain, especially phosphates. When this water is "clean" enough it is put back into the water system, usually into lakes or rivers, or it is used to water city parks. This is how chemicals present in various conventional cleaners build up in the ecosystem and can kill part of the food chain, create algae bloom, or make fish and animals sick.
Are there any health benefits to using environmentally friendly cleaning products?Yes! Harmful chemicals are prevalent not only in general consumer cleaning products but also in conventional foods, cosmetics, home construction, clothing and and many other industries. By using more ecologically friendly products, including green cleaning products, you can greatly reduce human health risks by limiting your exposure to the harmful chemicals present in their traditional counterparts.
Some Green Cleaning Terms to Know:
What are Enzymes? - Enzymes are a class of proteins produced by living organisms to speed up chemical reactions. They are used to convert food into simple compounds for easy digestion and removal.
All are free from petroleum-based compounds, phosphates, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), dyes, and synthetic fragrances. They are made with a unique plant-based formula that breaks down rapidly, making them safer for the environment. The plant based formula allows for a neutral pH equivalent to that of clean water, and is ideal for people with allergies, asthma, and multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS).
What is a Toxin? - Most toxic substances or "toxins" are substances formed and excreted by microorganisms (such as bacteria and virus), plants and animals and are poisonous to humans. Is Citric Acid Harmful? - Citric acid is a weak organic acid and natural preservative used to add an acidic, or sour, taste to foods and soft drinks. In biochemistry, it is important as an intermediate in the citric acid cycle and therefore occurs in the metabolism of virtually all living things. Citric acid can also be used as an environmentally benign cleaning agent, an antioxidant, and a lubricant.
