Collecting a Dust Sample

- Wear the protective gloves & booties provided in the kit prior to starting the sampling procedure.
- The standard dust-sampling area is one square foot. (1 ft by 1ft or 12” x 12”or any dimensions that yield a one square foot area)
- Collect a sample of settled dust by following the sample collection procedures below:
1. Identify, without disturbing the dust or touching the area, the one-square-foot area to be sampled.
2. Tear open the provided wipe packet, being careful not to touch the wipe itself with bare hands. With a gloved hand, remove the wipe from the open packet and unfold. Handle the wipe only with gloved hands.
3. Proceed to wipe the selected one-square-foot area with an “S” motion over the entire surface in a north-south direction, pressing firmly with the palm.
4. Fold the wipe in half with the contaminated side facing inward and repeat the wipe motion in an east-west direction. Attempt to include all visible dust.
5. Fold the wipe again with the contaminated side facing inward and wipe the perimeter of the one-square-foot sampling area.
6. Fold the wipe one last time with the contaminated side facing inward and place the wipe in one of the enclosed plastic centrifuge tubes.
7. Mark the tube with the same sample number identifier used on the chain of custody form.
8. Repeat with the remaining 4 samples, making sure to change gloves for each.
- Include the dimensions of the sampled area on the chain-of-custody form.
- Do not mix samples. Confirm that there is only one sample per container.
- Complete the chain of custody form and place sample tubes and completed chain of custody form inside the original box. Place the box inside of the enclosed shipper bag to be sent to the lab.

Collecting a Soil Sample

- Wear the protective gloves and booties provided in the kit prior to starting this sampling procedure.
- Place 2 tablespoon amounts of soil into an enclosed centrifuge tube.
- Do not mix samples. Confirm that there is only one sample per container.
- Mark the tube with the same sample number identifier used on the chain-of-custody form.
- Complete the chain of custody form and place sample tubes and completed chain of
custody form inside the original box. Place the box inside of the enclosed shipper bag to be sent to the lab.

Collecting a Paint Sample

- Wear the protective gloves and booties provided in the kit prior to starting this sampling procedure
- For results in weight percent, use the enclosed paint scraper to score the area of paint to be removed. Slide the blade along the score and under the paint. Remove the section of paint down to, but not including, the substrate, ensuring that all layers of paint are collected.
- For results in mass per unit area (mg/cm2), apply clear adhesive tape over an area larger than the sample size desired. Cut through the adhesive material and paint layers using a punch or template and sharp knife. Remove the adhesive tape, paint, and a thin layer of the substrate using the scraper provided.
- Place a one-tablespoon sample of paint chips into an enclosed plastic centrifuge tube.
- Do not mix samples. Assure that there is only one sample per container.
- Mark the tube with the same number identifier used on the chain-of-custody form.
- Complete the chain of custody form and place sample tubes and completed chain of custody form inside the original box. Place the box inside of the enclosed shipper bag to be sent to the lab.

You will receive your analytical results within 5 business days after the sample is received. A 24 hour turn around option is available upon request.
