zeolite

The term zeolite can mean either a specific porous aluminosilicate or any crystalline oxide with well-defined pore structure. The pores are so tiny that they are sometimes called molecular sieves. Zeolites are excellent water softeners. They can absorb hard magnesium and calcium cations in water leaving behind the soft cations.
