Tampons: The Truth and the Hype
by Linda Mason Hunter
Rumors touting that tampons contain dioxin and/or asbestos simply are not true, according to the Federal Drug Administration. Another rumor, that rayon fibers in tampons cause toxic shock syndrome, is also false. The FDA maintains that tampons do not contain any asbestos. While they used to contain traces of dioxin (in the bleaching process), they are now completely dioxin-free. And toxic shock syndrome, which is rare today, is promoted by super-absorbent brands, not by fiber content. Package labeling should describe the degree of absorbency as well as the signs of toxic shock syndrome and how to minimize the risk.
