Your Low Carbon Pet

Posted on August 15, 2018 by Matt Tomasino There have been 0 comments

Let’s face it, most pet owners love their pet more than, well, some other family members. Either way, the sky is the limit when it comes to making your pet happy, but taking a moment to determine how your pet plays a role in environmental impact can be sobering.

According to a UCLA study (as reported by the UCLA Newsroom),

“meat-eating by dogs and cats creates the equivalent of about 64 million tons of carbon dioxide a year, which has about the same climate impact as a year’s worth of driving from 13.6 million cars”.

Add in the enormous amount of Eco-unfriendly pet products and the environmental impact increases exponentially. Simple changes, from diet and composting to green litter and natural flea repellant, can significantly lessen your pet’s carbon footprint.

Walking the green walk means walking your pet right alongside you.

Green Furry Fun

Sure, it can be fun to buy a toy or special treat for your best pal but don’t get too caught up in the conventional, massively polluting, $60 billion dollar pet accessory industry. Instead, consider pet care, toys and supplies sourced from recycled, sustainable and even compostable materials. This includes products such as:

  • Hemp collars and leashes
  • Organic cotton pet beds
  • Reclaimed dog clothing
  • Bamboo bowls
  • Stainless steel food canisters
  • Recycled rubber balls and bones

These and so many more green pet options combine sturdy usefulness with Eco-responsibility that will certainly have other pet owners inquiring.

Conscious Cleanup

Just like children, pets require constant maintenance. It can be grooming and shampooing or weather wipes and waste cleanup, but the environmental impact is often highly damaging. Finding sustainable, green applications for your pet are abundant. When it comes to pet waste bags and cleanup items, you may want to consider:

  • Citrus sourced pest control
  • Compostable pet waste bags by Biobags
  • Carpet extraction cleaner
  • Mineral salt and essential oil based pet urine odor cleaner
  • Steam carpet cleaner vacuums
  • Repurpose pet waste bags from clothing, food or junk mail packaging

Cleaning up does not need to include caustic, toxic chemicals that can put health at risk. Stick to naturally sourced products like these or others that tout easy to understand ingredients with excellent results.

Eco-Eats

Treehugger cites studies of pet obesity in the range of  34% of dogs and 35% of cats in the US.

With these and studies like the one from UCLA showing the significant impact on the environment when pets consume meat products, you may want to consider more Eco-friendly eats. Most pet foods contain beef or lamb. However, as reported by Green America, The Environmental Working Group’s “Meat Eater’s Guide” notes that beef produces 13 times more greenhouse gases over its life cycle than vegetable proteins, and the carbon footprint of lamb is 50 percent higher.

If it is possible, choose plant-based or organic pet foods. These are manufactured from factory to bowl with significantly less of a carbon imprint compared to conventional foods. Some pet lovers are even putting their animal on a vegan diet (studies are underway regarding vegan animals) and if it were to catch on, the production warrants an excellent green choice. There are also plenty of homemade pet food recipes which you can find and add in any Eco-friendly knowledge you can apply.

Other helpful jumping off points that may get you your low carbon pet include:

  • Reduce overpopulation by spaying or neutering
  • Use natural pet shampoos, conditioners and soaps
  • Buy pet food in bulk reducing packaging and transport pollution
  • Scoop the poop, don’t let it seep into your surrounding water table
  • Avoid chemical flea repellant and use DIY or non-toxic brands
  • Look for Eco-friendly non-clay cat litter made from corn or wheat
  • Rescue a shelter pet as this saves on supplies and reduces suffering
  • Save on fossil fuel output by walking with your pet more

It doesn’t take much to create a low carbon pet. If you’re reading this, you’re probably a green creation of your own doing. Don’t let your pet bark up the wrong tree and try some of these tips to get them on the green chuckwagon.
