Yoga, Exercise and the Environment

As you forge through your life you may be practicing yoga or some other form of exercise to keep all those cylinders firing. If not, well you’re probably thinking about it. Either way there are some correlations between keeping your body and mind healthy while remaining committed to your green mission. So many innovations in sustainable, recyclable and reusable yoga and exercise gear have made their way into the mainstream scene. It is almost becoming a faux pas to not have at least one green friendly item for your workout needs. Also, apart from the tangible, there is something to be said about the results of practicing yoga or keeping fit that has the potential to positively effect the big picture.

Spiritual Discipline

Hinduism, Buddhism, Shamanism and Jainism are less religious and more spiritual practices that have been transcending people worldwide for centuries. Evidence of the history of yoga is weaved throughout these and several other spiritual practices that have deemed it “spiritual discipline.” In fact, there are renderings of yoga postures found on artifacts dating back as far as 3000 BC. It was originally intended to focus on and apply to the surrounding world yet since then self-enlightenment became the ultimate goal. Where there is self-enlightenment there is the potential for a more open mind, an open heart and ultimately wide open eyes. The physical benefits of yoga as well as exercise have the potential to result in such positive responses as:

  • Reducing the risk of cardiovascular, diabetes and other systemic diseases.
  • Improving sleep.
  • Encouraging a healthy pregnancy.
  • Decreasing food cravings and shedding weight.
  • Improvement of bedroom performance.
  • Decreasing anxiety, depression and overall stress.

These as well as many other attributes of fitness routines could also change one’s outlook on the environment.

The Grand Scheme

When people do not feel healthy in their body and their mind they are more apt to give up on altruistic motives such as helping others and cleaning up their toxic lifestyle. When yoga and exercise are practiced these feelings quickly fall to the wayside and a once closed minded vessel begins to open. Recycling begins to make sense and greener ways emerge replacing those feelings of despair with hope. Reaching for environmentally friendly yoga and fitness gear becomes a no-brainer and before one knows it they are postured ‘down dog’ heading toward their ‘warrior pose’ to make their life and those around them way more green.

Green Gear

Searching for environmentally friendly yoga and fitness gear couldn’t be easier. Get yourself a natural rubber mat and an organic cotton yoga bolster to take your classes in green style. Carry it all to the studio or gym in a recycled bike tube bag, and bring a reusable water bottle.

Embrace your physical and mental health by using eco-friendly yoga and exercise gear. It is yet another small step you can take toward a more sustainable planet.
