The College Green

Posted on August 17, 2016 by Matt Tomasino There have been 0 comments

There is often the wind of change amongst those whose future relies on it. In many cases, this begins when a teen steps into adulthood through a college experience. During this time, the belief, desire and ability to make change a reality begins, en mass, throughout campuses across our globe.

Today, the green movement is in full force as the college green example is spilling over into the mainstream. College students are now paving the way for environmental protection just as it continues to do for human rights, which, of course, includes your environment.

Your Digs

Whether you are starting your higher education path or are in the thick of it, keeping a green dorm room is the beginning of green change.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Reusable Furniture - Often, for the financial and environmental price of shipping your furniture, you can purchase used dressers, tables, chairs, and even bed frames at most local town thrift shops or secondhand stores. All you need is green bedding and the rest can be reusable furniture that reduces landfill, fossil fuel and natural resource waste.

Have A Good Strip - Using smart power strips will cut down on hidden electricity output from vampire draining appliances that are off.

Swap Out Your Bulbs - Like recycling, it really is a no-brainer but if your living space does not already have LED bulbs, swap out the old and put in the new. They’ll stay there well after you’re gone knowing you have done another small deed to reduce coal (most of our electricity source) pollution.

Green Degrees

Becoming a pro on the green platform means getting a degree that backs it up. Here is an example, as per recommended by the Princeton Review, of some green degrees you may want to consider.

Bioethics - Consulting on the pros and cons of scientific ethical issues such as genetically modified foods, stem cell research and anti-pollution tactics.

Communications - The communications sector of the green industry is becoming more prominent each year. This is where you would “cultivate and maintain contacts with journalists, set up speaking engagements, write executive speeches and annual reports, respond to inquiries, and speak to a wide audience on behalf of your client or cause.”

Engineering Science - This field of study is an integral part of future change as it uses the “principles of engineering along with biology and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems. You'll be involved in efforts to improve recycling, waste disposal, water and air pollution control, and public health.”

Ask for Green

It may be a challenge applying and maintaining your college choice. However, higher education is also a business and like many current businesses, colleges are looking to attract students with Eco-friendly options. Not only are there green curriculum choices but also green dorms, solar heat and A/C, compostable products, organic food LEED certification and much more.

Here are a few of the greenest American colleges for 2016 as reported by Best Colleges:

  • Colorado State University
  • Stanford University
  • University of Wisconsin - OshKosh
  • Middlebury College
  • University of Colorado
  • Emory University
  • University of California - Santa Barbara
  • Santa Clara University
  • Arizona State University
  • University of Massachusetts - Amherst

Embrace the college green scene because a campus of higher learning is a campus of higher thinkers that are just beginning to see the big picture, and are doing something to change it.
