Stop Deforestation

Posted on April 14, 2018 by Matt Tomasino There have been 0 comments

With fifty-six acres of forest being destroyed each minute (that’s over 15 billion trees), deforestation has become the second leading cause of global warming, producing about 24% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Rainforest decimation alone is estimated by climate scientists to produce more greenhouse gas emissions than all the cars and trucks on the road combined, globally! If something isn’t done soon about deforestation there will be a huge price to pay.

Why You Need To Save the Forests

Climate change is in full swing and, sorry naysayers, factual enough to cause alarm (so clam up and get out of the way). If others want to deny it or are just too lazy to do anything about it, it is up to you to mobilize. Whether you give incentives, Eco-shame or go at it alone, anything will make a difference as opposed to doing nothing at all. Benefits of stopping
deforestation and encouraging sustainable forest management include:

  • Conserves water
  • Prevents flooding
  • Reduces run-off
  • Controls soil erosion
  • Reduces river siltation
  • Protects fisheries
  • Preserves biodiversity
  • Preserves cultures and traditions
  • Saving 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity
  • Supporting livelihoods of 1.6 billion people

Do It Now

If the statistics don’t do it for you then take a look around. The products you are using are part of the devastation. From plastics to glass to a wide array of synthetic toxins, your disposable habits have covered the earth with nature destroying waste. If you want to do something about deforestation and support forest management then start by immediately reducing any products made from trees: paper, cardboard, building materials, furniture and even kitchenware. Instead, look for products that offer an alternative or sustainable approach to wood. These will include:

  • Reclaimed wood - There are many furniture and home decor products made from naturally harvested wood.
  • Bamboo - This grass (yup, it’s actually grass) is one of the most sustainable resources on earth. It can be found as furniture, towels, serving bowls, reusable cleaning cloths, toilet paper, and much more.
  • Compostable leafware - This is tableware made from fallen palm leaves.
  • Recycled - Anything recycled is better than anything bought and discarded into landfills.

In addition to choosing non-tree sourced products you can also remain active as you choose your food by avoiding palm oil at all costs. Palm oil is a by-product of deforestation that can easily be replaced by more healthy, sustainable oils such as avocado, hemp and walnut.

7 Tree Sourced Products You Didn’t Know About

There are more products made from trees than you think. Avoiding the usual ones such as paper and cardboard are easy but these may surprise you.

  • Latex rubber gloves
  • Sponges (made from cellulose)
  • Wine corks
  • Chewing gum
  • Car wax
  • Hair dye
  • Chocolate

Many of these products can be replaced or purchased from socially conscious companies that recognize deforestation and maintain sustainable practices. Look for company literature or labeling that assures Eco-friendly manufacturing. Get involved now to stop deforestation by maintaining responsible consumerism and supporting organizations that reforest and conserve. A list of 100 organizations can be found at Forestry Degree. Don’t sit back and wait for someone else to clean up decades of human missteps and instead mobilize yourself, your friends, family and even strangers to get on board once and for all.
