Slowly Morph Your Kitchen Green

Anyone can tell someone to go-green but it is rarely discussed that it may not be the easiest financial switchover. However, it can be done over time and the best place to start is to slowly morph your kitchen green. Once the ‘heart’ of the home is running on a substantial Eco-change then it is easy to move on to other rooms. From food and storage prep to party essentials there are many green options to consider.

Food and Storage Prep

Saving money by purchasing cheap plastic containers to organize leftovers and dry goods may seem like a good idea. However, over time, microwaving and washing these low grade plastics can easily leach chemical toxins into your food. In addition, avoiding foods packaged in toxic plastics or transferring them to glass containers is also best.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, hazardous plastic chemical ingredients to look for are identified by these numbers on the bottom of each plastic container in the middle of a triangle:

#1 polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE)

#2 high density polyethylene (HDPE)

#3 polyvinyl chloride (V or PVC)

#4 low density polyethylene (LDPE)

#5 polypropylene (PP)

#6 polystyrene (PS)

#7 other

Look for BPA-free and other toxin-free storage containers as well as plastic wrap and the like made from soluble plant fibers and other compostable products.

Utensils

Eco-friendly tableware and utensils are an excellent replacement mission that can slowly turn your kitchen green. Traditional stainless steel forks, knives and spoons are fine but why not look into sustainable choices such as products made from bamboo.

Bamboo is a durable, earth-friendly material able to be made into aesthetically pleasing products such as utensils, cutting boards, chopsticks, plates and even napkins.

Energy Efficient Upgrade

As your kitchen appliances get older you can begin replacing them with energy efficient choices. Look for the Energy Star label and donate or properly dispose your old appliance rather than just toss them it into a landfill.

Some energy efficient upgrades may include:

  • Low Water Dishwasher - Uses less water than if you did your dishes by hand.
  • Multi-Compartment Fridge - These refrigerators keep in essential energy.
  • Cook With Convection - A convection oven can prepare many small meals that would otherwise require the extra energy of a large oven.
  • Reusable Filter Coffee - Coffee pod machines are convenient but have been wreaking havoc on the environment since their inception. Use a standard coffee brewer with a reusable filter.
  • Magnetic Induction Cooktop - “Typical electric or gas stoves heat the air under the pan, but a magnetic induction cooktop's heat is transferred directly to the pan through high-tech magnetism, leading to little wasted heat.” (Houzz)
  • Exhaust Hood - A properly installed exhaust hood over your stove can reduce interior heat  saving on summer A/C increases. Removes moisture and pollutants from the air too.

Non-Toxic Scrub Down

As each of your under the sink toxic cleaning supplies empty, replacing them with green kitchen cleanup choices is a win-win. Look for biodegradable ingredients that may include natural, ammonia-free, enzyme cleaning agents such as probiotics, citrus fruit infusion, and various natural scents. Non-toxic cleaning may also consist of recycled paper towels; airzyme technology; essential oil infused disinfectants; and compostable trash bags.

There’s no need to become overwhelmed when attempting to green your kitchen. All it takes is slowly replacing and then replenishing with smart, Eco-friendly choices.
