Post Holiday Eco-Solutions

When the holidays are over, you have an opportunity to utilize some post holiday eco solutions rather than add to the continual waste around you. There are many ways to harness various resources from your holiday leftovers for the betterment of your community and the planet.

Scrape the Scraps

If you have a composting system setup, after holiday meal scraps are perfect to add. If you don’t, now is the best time to start one. Plus, if you used compostable products for your holiday event, this is yet another opportunity to drastically reduce your garbage footprint.

No compost, no problem. Pack up those leftovers and donate to a homeless shelter or make a soup out of the scraps and help feed the needy.

Scoop the Paper

Wrapping paper that can be salvaged, folded and stored will save you time, money and unnecessary waste when your next present needs to be wrapped.

Scoop up as much used wrapping paper as you can and toss it in a pile until you can go through it. Cut in squares and place in a box under your bed or in a back closet for a treasure trove of upcycled designs that would otherwise end up in a landfill. You can do the same with empty boxes and if storage is a problem, gently pull them apart and store flat with wrapping paper. When needed, simply glue, tape or staple corners back together and you have a free gift box ready to go.

Tree to Earth

If you celebrate the holiday with a real Christmas tree then it is your responsibility to put your tree back into the earth. With over 10 million Christmas trees ending up in landfills each year, recycling yours is essential. Sure, if a tree is in a landfill, just like many compostable products, it will eventually biodegrade. However, it is the release of methane gas from these and other biological landfill waste that has become a huge problem for global warming.

Recycled trees can be used for many things including landscaping mulch or stream bank stabilization. Some businesses that sell trees offer recycling incentives. You can also contact the National Christmas Tree Association or check your local listings for a Christmas tree recycling program near you.

With holiday gifts comes holiday waste and electronics are at the top of the list. The amount of e-waste that is produced has become a serious problem due to the degenerating toxicity from these devices.

Small Footprint Family reports that,

“Each year, 130 million cell phones are thrown out, weighing approximately 65,000 tons. Recycling your old phone prevents hazardous elements like mercury, cadmium and lead from ending up in our landfills.”

Before dumping your old cell phone, tablet, computer or other used electronic device look into programs that recycle and re-use rare earth metals and other components. Some organizations will even send you a prepaid mailing envelope to ship your e-waste to their company while paying you for it at the same time.

Digital Thank You’s

Once all the dust settles, you may want to send out some thank you notes. Yes, it’s nice to receive a handwritten note in a mailed envelope however, practically speaking, it wastes paper.

There are hundreds of digital ‘thank you’ sites offering a variety of graphics and delivery options to make your digital thank you just as special as a handwritten one. Some even include picture uploads so you can send images of the kids, pets, grandparents and more.

Post holiday Eco-solutions are easy and smart. All it takes is a little wherewithal to gather up the loose ends so your after holiday carbon footprint is significantly reduced.
