Pay it Forward: Holiday Decorations and More

Posted on December 12, 2018 by Matt Tomasino There have been 0 comments

Every year we pull out our holiday decorations, dust them off, and begin their festive placement. And every year, there are bound to be old decorations that just don’t make the cut and get tossed, inevitably ending up in an already bursting at the seams landfill. This year pay it forward and donate your holiday decorations for re-use and create some recycled happiness. In turn, go even further and bring a Christmas tree, Chanukah menorah or any other holiday tradition to a family in need. It may be the best gift you give (and receive) this season. Below are a few ideas on how to go about bringing past cheer into new cheer.

Gently Used

Before you walk up to donate your used decorations, make sure they are not so used that they will look like a pile of junk when handed off. Choose the ones that are still intact with enough paint and shine to make a child smile. Be sure that if it is electrical it does not have loose, frayed wires that can cause a shock or fire and try to avoid anything personal, such as photo ornaments still holding your child’s baby photo.

Goodwill, Salvation Army and the Like

One of the first places to drop off your donations is the local Goodwill, Salvation Army, church, temple or mosque thrift shop. These places thrive on usable donations and it is never too late to add to their holiday wares. Be sure and get a receipt for your donation as it is always nice to document their value on your income taxes.

Visit a Shelter

Practically every town or city has a shelter where the homeless can get a hot meal and a bed to sleep in. They are often not the most aesthetic organizations, offering little when it comes to comfort. This is where you can come in. Visit a local shelter yourself or with friends in tow, and bring your used (or bought) holiday decorations and anything else you may want to add to make someone know that there are people out there who care.

Go to Town Hall

Check out your community town hall or local representative office and find out if public land is allowed to be decorated. There may be areas they are willing to let you spruce up with your gently used holiday decorations, as long as you adhere to some specific mandates that may be required.

Here is another location that needs all the love and cheer that can be given this time of year. This is especially true for the children’s ward. Stop by a nearby hospital with a box of decorations and even gifts and ask how you can get involved.

It surely is a giving season and rather than get completely sucked into the consumerism cycle, step out for a while and pay it forward. Finding your giving self is just as important as being with family and friends.
