Love the Cleaning and the Cleaner, Green Home Profiles: Natural Choices
Who doesn’t love the sight and smell of a freshly cleaned bathroom?
When all the hard surfaces glisten and shine, the towels are fresh and fluffy, the curtains gently moving in a summer breeze, it fills an almost atavistic need in the psyche for order, cleanliness, and style.
The need for clean has not changed. The way we clean has. Stone-age women had little but water, sand, salt, and clay to refurbish their spaces. Then came the Industrial Revolution, 1750-1850 and – almost a century later – the advent of a period in history known as Better Living Through Chemistry. The phrase was coined by DuPont – a member of what we greenies like to call “Big Chem”.
By 1982, DuPont was smart enough to drop the word “chemistry”, as more and more people woke up to the fact that chemicals – rather than making modern life better – were in many cases killing us (and everything around us)!
Today, we have Natural Choices. As Vanessa Murray notes: “We’re all about sustainability; that is, being as good to the planet as we can possibly be while still meeting the needs of people who really must have a white shirt.”
Vanessa is product manager at Pacific Sands, Inc., the company behind the Natural Choices line of “green” cleaning products. The job, however, is no accident. Vanessa was not only using their superb products but also working as a home-based distributor when networking turned her distributorship into a “dream” job – and one that fit her to a T. Vanessa had been living the eco-friendly lifestyle since she was a child.
In addition to its own automatic dishwashing detergent, laundry soap, and bleach alternative, Natural Choices makes and/or distributes several product lines, including EcoOne pool items and PureGreen 24, a line of disinfectants. Unlike some companies, who brand themselves as environmentally friendly but offer products as toxic as anything made by Big Chem, Natural Choices products are safe and natural AND completely effective.
For example, PureGreen 24 disinfectant has one of the fastest bacteria/fungus “kill” times on the market. It also has a full 24-hour residual benefit. In spite of that, it is odorless, safe for use, and requires no rinsing, even on toddler toys. Nor does it require an EPA warning label like “Danger”, “Caution”, or “Hazards to Humans”.
In a world where the Environmental Working Group has identified 2,000 household products that wear a green label but require rubber gloves and/or a mask, it’s good to know that Natural Choices is tested by, and on, real people, who don’t wear gloves or masks.
Vanessa mentions her husband, who uses Natural Choices’ PROx wood deck and patio cleaner on everything, including the garage floor.
“Because it’s concentrated, like all our products, he just pours it on, spreads it with a push broom, then rinses.”
Concentrated, but still highly affordable. “We’re not shipping you something that’s two percent active ingredient and 98 percent water.”
Top it all off with recyclable, biodegradable, compostable packaging and you have a winner. The packaging may, in fact, be the hardest part:
“It has to break down, but not while products are still in it. Remember, these products are mostly chemical, no matter now beneficial and non-toxic. So we want it to disintegrate, but not on your shelf!”
To test packaging durability, the company keeps its products on shelves very much like the average homeowner’s laundry room setup. There is no air conditioner or dehumidifier. Moreover, the products and packaging are locally (or nationally) sourced, right from the Upper Midwest, so products proudly wear the “American-made” label.
In fact, Natural Choices is the company DuPont probably wishes it could be. Not only does Natural Choices never test on animals, it shares an awareness with its customers of the dangers to human, animal, and planetary health in the face of an ever-rising list of new chemicals that come on the market each year. Here are the sad facts:
- More than 75,000 chemicals are currently licensed for commercial use.
- More than 2,000 new synthetic chemicals are registered every year.
- The EPA tallied close to 10,000 chemical ingredients in cosmetics, food, and consumer products. Very few of these chemicals were in our environment or our bodies just 75 years ago.
- In 1998, U.S. industries manufactured 6.5 trillion pounds of 9,000 different chemicals.
- In 2000, major American companies dumped 7.1 billion pounds of 650 different industrial chemicals into our air and water.
- Except in the case of foods, drugs, or pesticides, companies are under no legal or regulatory obligation to concern themselves with how their products might harm human health.
“People often ask me if Natural Choice products are safe enough to eat. I always say of course, but why would you? It’s still soap!”
