Integrated Plastic Waste Management: Compostable Products

Posted on May 4, 2018 by Matt Tomasino There have been 0 comments

The enormous amount of plastic waste being generated by large institutions has finally created concern due to the fiscal draw now needed to clean it up. Call it what you will but it really is the bottom line that gets bottoms out of chairs and into action. More organizations, institutions, corporations and the like are considering integrated plastic waste management in response to cost effectiveness and consumer concern. A study by researchers at the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow, India titled ‘Integrated Plastic Waste Management: Environmental and Improved Health Approaches’ which was published in Procedia Environmental Sciences (Vol 35, 2016, Pages 692-700) stated, “Plastic waste management is a critical issue. Over 300 million metric tons of plastics are produced in the world annually and about fifty percent of this volume is for disposal applications, products that are discarded within a year of their purchase...Efforts are in progress for development of efficient and precise conversion of renewable raw materials into innovative polymeric products through recent technologies which are superior in terms of performance, environmental and cost perspectives.”

Consumer Demand

It has been said that the people are a sleeping giant and when that giant is awakened there is nothing that can stop it from getting what it wants. Most people have been “asleep” for way too long as one result of convenient disposable consumerism. When packaging and products “dumb down” the public it is not easy to swing the pendulum back to more responsible, sustainable practices. However, hope is on the horizon as demand for compostable products and packaging seems to be on the rise. Packaging Digest interviewed Ian Lifshitz, the vice president of sustainability & stakeholder relations for APP (Asia Pulp and Paper) regarding consumer sentiment for biodegradable, and compostable products as well as packaging stating that, “More than ever, consumers are demanding sustainable choices when it comes to the way their food is packaged. Because of the many complexities around sustainability and food packaging, consumers are looking for brands to offer a variety of packaging solutions that keep the environment’s well-being in mind.” Whether it is compostable utensils, cups, lids, plates, bowls, food storage or compostable plastic bags like those made by BioBag, the choices are becoming more available every day.

Melding Compost and Compostable Products

Compostable products offer many benefits. These include:

  • Reduces landfill waste
  • Breaks down in a matter of weeks
  • Enhances consumer confidence
  • Encourages green manufacturing
  • Perpetuates more Eco-friendly action
  • Protects wildlife and human health

However, the most advantageous aspect of using compostable products is that you can add them to your compost setup. This is not only an excellent choice for homeowners, particularly when used for a house party, but it can make a huge difference when it comes to small and large businesses alike. This includes hospitals, schools, military complexes and restaurants which, when compostable products and composting are utilized, an enormous amount of waste can be avoided.

The potential is huge for this sustainable shift to move to the next level. Currently, the United States and particularly Asia and Europe are implementing more compostable products and composting action. If the sleeping giant doesn't go back to sleep it looks very hopeful for the future when it comes to these and many other earth friendly demands and advancements.
