Indoor Air Quality Hacks

Posted on October 5, 2017 by Matt Tomasino There have been 0 comments

You may not realize it but your indoor air could be more polluted than what’s outside your home.   As contaminants enter your interior space they have the potential to stick around, literally. These compounds can attach themselves to your linens, tabletops and even dish-ware.

In a study published in the journal, Science of the Total Environment, co-author Prashant Kumar of the University of Surrey commented,

“...there are actually various sources of pollution that have a negative effect on air quality, many of which are found inside our homes and offices. From cooking residue to paints, varnishes and fungal spores, the air we breathe indoors is often more polluted than that outside.”

Find out if you may be in harm’s way and some simple home improvement indoor air quality hacks you can do to make breathing safe again.

Are You at Risk?

With so many potential risks to breathe in, it is no wonder much research has shown how compromised indoor air can lead to a host of health challenges. This is particularly true for:

  • Asthma
  • Other respiratory problems
  • Skin disorders
  • Sleep imbalance.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that indoor air can even cause:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat

Add in tobacco smoke or pet dander and indoor air quality could significantly decrease.

Quick Fixes to Hack Your Indoor Air

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms or anything similar you could be a victim of tainted indoor air quality. It is always best to see your doctor to rule out any other causes and then apply some changes.

These are quick fixes to hack into and improve your indoor air quality.

  • Open windows
  • Change air conditioner filters
  • Have guests remove shoes when visiting
  • Turn on exhaust fans, especially in an attic
  • Get a test for radon, asbestos and any other toxin or allergen
  • Use non-toxic cleaning solutions to keep surfaces disinfected daily
  • Vacuum everything possible including rugs, couches, chairs and curtains
  • Purchase your own indoor air quality test kit (especially if your home was built in the 1970’s)

Plug In a Helper

Sometimes, using a device that can scrub your indoor air makes a huge difference. Try an air purifier which requires very little maintenance and could have you walking into a completely different home.

When you leave your living space, switch on your air purifier which uses very little energy as it gently sweeps your interior atmosphere. It catches many allergens like animal dander, dust mites, mold, pollen and various toxins out of the air before it gets a chance to embed into your furniture and other locations. When you return, you may experience a room that smells and feels like the top of a pristine, mountain surrounded by fresh, almost tasty air.

A study by researchers from the Department of Pediatrics, University of Louisville School of Medicine, Louisville, KY, published in Current Allergy Reports (October 2011) concluded that,

“Air filtration is frequently recommended as a component of environmental control practices for patients with allergic respiratory disease. Studies support multiple interventions, including air filtration, as methods to improve outcomes in the treatment of allergic respiratory diseases. Residential air filtration can be provided by WHF [whole house filtration] via the home’s HVAC [heating, ventilation, air-conditioning] system, PRACs [portable room air cleaners], or a combination of both.”

Another helpful device is a dehumidifier. This can dry out areas that would otherwise become saturated with a thin layer of moisture creating the perfect breeding ground for mites and mold.

Try some of these indoor air quality hacks to see if you can clean up your personal biosphere for less contaminated air and more optimal health.
