Holiday Overdrive: Green Holiday Facts

Posted on November 14, 2018 by Matt Tomasino There have been 0 comments

During this holiday season you may want to take pause and give some thought to the result of all the increased indulgence around you. It is a time that many people throw caution to the wind in the name of family, friends and holiday cheer. But before you swig back one too many and add to the ever rising holiday waste, take a seat and peruse how the world goes into holiday overdrive as the celebrations of Christmas, Kwanza, New Years and Hanukkah swallow way more than they can chew.

1) If every American family wrapped just three presents in recycled paper or re-used material it would save enough paper to cover approximately forty-five thousand football fields.

2) One card left off each family’s holiday mailing saves about fifty cubic yards of paper. Send holiday e-mails instead, explaining your concern for the otherwise useless waste of our precious resources.

3) Every single American family needs to re-use just two feet of ribbon to be able to wrap a holiday bow around the entire earth.

4) According to reports by CNN and the National Retail Federation (NRF), Twenty-five to thirty million extra tons of trash is generated between Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is approximately a twenty-five percent increase during the holidays compared to non-holidays.

5) Meat production increases during holiday festivities. A cattle farm of about 10,000 cows produces approximately 37,075 pounds of pollution. Have a vegetarian holiday and save acres of land.

6) Watch your holiday cooking. 40% of an oven top’s burner’s heat is wasted when a 6” pot is placed on an 8” burner.

7) For every pound of recycled material, one pound of CO2 is saved.

8) Keep holiday travel local. For every gallon of gas, 19.56 pounds of CO2 is emitted into the atmosphere.

9) Watch your shopping scents. Synthetically scented products often contain DEP, a chemical that has been linked to sperm damage. When shopping for scented holiday candles, cologne, perfume and more make sure organic materials have been used.

10) Use home filtered water for your holiday guests. About 25% of bottled water is purified tap water that costs 2500 to 10,000 times more than it is worth. Not to mention the perverse waste of oil and other energy used to package and ship each brand.

11) Give the gift of no junk. Educate your holiday ‘giftee’s’ by letting them know that if they opt out of receiving junk mail they can save approximately two trees per year (most households receive between 40 and 60 pounds of junk mail annually). Contact your Department of Consumer Affairs for information on how to stop junk mail.

12) Go digital music instead of CD’s for your gift choices this year. Downloading music cuts carbon emissions up to 80%.

Hopefully these green holiday facts will open your eyes to how you can make this season as well as subsequent ones that much more eco-friendly. Print out this list and add it to your holiday card mailings or hand it out to your holiday guests.
