Green Solutions for the Summer Heat

Posted on June 17, 2017 by Jen Stinnett There have been 0 comments

Escaping the summer heat can be one of the most expensive aspects of owning a home. As temperatures rise, so do cooling bills and overall energy costs, forcing homeowners into greener solutions for temperature control. For those that have yet to invest in sustainability, the summer is a perfect time to do so as a way to not only save money, but also to preserve the environment as well. If you’re looking to beat the heat at home this summer, here are some hot tips for staying cool.

Window Film

Window film is one of the most underappreciated ways to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home. Upon installation, it blocks 75% of the Sun’s heat, 99.9% of harmful UV radiation and even prevents sunlight from damaging and fading home furnishings. The immediate benefits of window film are aplenty, but it’s over time that it really starts to make a difference.

• Window film strengthens the integrity of your windows, making them less susceptible to damage in the case of collision or cracking.
• Window film can slash your cooling budget by over 50%, thus paying for itself several months after installation.
• Since it blocks out a vast majority of UV radiation, you can better your own and your family’s health by preventing overexposure to sunlight

Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans have been a common appliance in homes for years. Not only are they decorative, they also help take the pressure of your AC by circulating air around the home. Although installation is a bit labor intensive, the potential for savings makes it worth the effort. They are also an effective way to combat the colder weather once winter starts rolling in.

• Ceiling fans reduce your need to run the AC because they circulate cool air all throughout the house.
• Ceiling fans use considerably less energy than home air conditioning units.
• During the winter, you can flip the fan blades over and trap warm air in any room that a fan is installed.

Depending on where you live, planting trees is easily the greenest thing you can do to stave off the warm weather. Trees provide countless benefits to both the environment and your own daily life. They provide shade, they provide oxygen, and most importantly, create a better atmosphere around your home. If you’re able and willing, planting and maintaining tree life is highly recommended for any and every homeowner.

• Although not the quickest fix for warm temperatures, trees, once grown enough to provide shade, substantially reduce the need to run an AC unit. .
• Trees will make air cleaner and easier to breathe for you, your family and even your neighbors.
• Planting trees is a fun activity for the whole family, not to mention a rallying call for everyone in your community to do the same.

As you can see, beating the summer heat doesn’t have to require extensive use of air conditioning or HVAC units. By using greener practices you can not only reduce the amount of money you spend to cool your home, but also benefit the environment as a whole. So, if you’re looking to cool down this summer, remember that being a little greener can go a long way.
