Gearing Up for Holiday Travel

Over the next month travel itineraries will skyrocket. Families and friends will be trekking the globe to spend long awaited holiday time with one another.

Being prepared, and with a focus on making your holiday travel as eco-friendly as possible could be your best move yet. Whether it’s using green travel gear, eco-friendly hotels or social responsibility, there are many levels on which you can choose to do your part.

Try some of these travel and recreation ideas below and feel free to pass them along so the green machine keeps making it clean for all of us to live in-between.

Eco-Friendly Travel Choices

There’s a wide variety of options when it comes to Eco-friendly travel choices. Here are few from the Center for Responsible Travel. You may hear these terms when figuring out what may work for you as you plan on getting to your holiday destination.

Ecotourism - Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the welfare of local people.

Geotourism - Tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place, This can include its environment, heritage, aesthetics, culture and/or well-being of its residents.

Pro-Poor Tourism - Tourism that results in increased net benefits for poor people.

Responsible Tourism - Tourism that maximizes the benefits to local communities, minimizes negative social or environmental impacts, and helps local people conserve fragile cultures and habitats or species.

Sustainable Tourism - Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities. Sustainable tourism development guidelines and management practices are applicable to all forms of tourism in all types of destinations, including mass tourism and the various niche tourism segments.

Green Gear

No matter what type of Eco-friendly travel you decide on, bringing along the right gear to assist your trip is essential. Try some of these products before succumbing to mainstream consumerism.

Luggage - Before you invest in luggage derived from tortured animals, added dyes, synthetics and other planet sucking practices, look for more sustainable designs. These might include luggage made from hemp, bamboo, recycled bike tubes or recycled sailcloth.

Rain Gear - Having the proper rain gear when traveling can make all the difference. Look for Eco-friendly recycled material umbrellas and reusable rubber raincoats.

Fight the Bite - Bugs can be a real nuisance but when confronted with them while traveling, your whole day can turn on its head. Things like non-toxic mosquito repellant, bed bug spray and organic herbal bug balm are great add-ins to your travel bag-o-tricks.

Stay on the Move - Keeping your electronics charged while traveling can sometimes be a challenge. It can also be a real power sucker. Bring along some solar travel chargers to keep your devices fully loaded through the free power of the sun.

Final Tips

Now that you’ll be green geared to the gills keep in mind some other basic tips when traveling this holiday season.

  • Choose a green friendly hotel
  • Re-use sheets and towels
  • Rent a hybrid car
  • Purchase local products
  • Use public transportation
  • Opt for train travel whenever possible
  • Don’t be a tourist that does not respect their surroundings

This holiday season travel like a green crusader. Leave barely noticed footprints and set a good example for those that aren't as wide-eyed as you.
