Conserve And Purify Your Water

Posted on April 16, 2018 by Matt Tomasino There have been 0 comments

Many are predicting scarce water to become the future oil with high prices, rationing, and wars being fought over it. Much is being done to remedy the rapid depletion of this essential resource, but not enough.

According to a United Nations 2017 report,

“Over the past three years, countries have collectively increased their budgets for water, sanitation, and hygiene measures by nearly 5% per year, but 80% of countries find their budgets for water and sanitation services are still inadequate to meet national targets.”

Now is the best time to seriously consider conserving and purifying your water consumption. Through simple home improvement water saving practices such as composting toilets and low flow shower heads you can make a significant dent in municipal water savings. Add in purifying your water and it's a win-win for your health and your environment at the same time.

Collect It, Save It, Respect It

Water quality and conservation starts in your backyard, on your terrace or in any other outdoor location you can procure. Rain catchment barrels, are the first step in your home water conservation. Next is to install low flow fixtures and water saving devices throughout your home. If every household in the U.S. used low-flow fixtures, we could save 2 trillion gallons of water each year! A few minor changes, can make a huge impact.

Determine Your Water Safety

If you are drinking and bathing in municipal water with no filters, chances are you could be slowly accumulating toxins.

Green America reported,

“A 2003 study by the nonprofit Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) found that due to a combination of pollution and deteriorating equipment and pipes, the public water supplies in 19 of America’s largest cities delivered drinking water that contained contaminant levels exceeding EPA limits (either legal limits or unenforceable suggested limits) and may pose health risks to some residents. So even though it may test fine at its source, public water may still pick up contaminants on the way to your house.”

When you invest in a water purification device or system you are just about guaranteed to improve your health. However, be sure to use a water test kit and check local coding (regarding installation of specific water saving devices) to determine your water purification needs before purchasing any equipment. The water testing kit will give you insight as to the particular contaminants your water may contain so you can choose the most capable filters to protect yourself.

James P. McMahon, owner of Sweetwater, an air/water purification consulting firm commented,

“Most people purchase the wrong equipment because they skip this very important step, and then they’ve wasted money and resources on a system that isn’t making their water any safer,”

When you conserve and purify your water you become one more socially conscious individual doing something to better yourself and your planet. However, most of all, you become an inspiration and educator to those around you who will hopefully follow your lead.
