Clean Slate Camping and Hiking: The Eco-Explorer

Posted on November 1, 2017 by Matt Tomasino There have been 0 comments

This fall, rebalance your outdoor experience with clean slate camping and hiking. This goes beyond the “carry in, carry out” rule of leaving your surroundings the way you found them.

Clean slate camping and hiking means that in addition to this age old, recreational, naturalist activity, you add in some unique green gear and supplies that supports a low carbon footprint. This kind of commitment catapults you beyond “tourist hiker” status putting you on a level of Eco-Friendly Expert Explorer.

Basic Hiking and Camping Checklist

Before venturing on a clean slate camping and hiking excursion, the first order of business is setting up your basic checklist. These are essential items that can make your hike worry-free and, most of all, safe.

Blue Planet Green Living recommends these items:

  • Map
  • Compass
  • First-aid kit
  • Matches and fire starter
  • Pocket knife
  • Extra food
  • Water and water purification
  • Sun protection (sunscreen and sunglasses)
  • Rain gear and extra clothing
  • Flashlight/headlamp

Being prepared is essential for any outdoor excursion and this list can help get you started. However, adding in some green gear can turn your basic checklist up a notch.

Let There Be Light

Enjoying the great outdoors doesn’t have to remove you from every electronic convenience. From campsite light to a sustainable charging station, you can keep your devices charged up for staying connected to music, photos and emergency response if needed.

This is where a portable solar charger, non-battery crank charge flashlight or hybrid solar powered lantern are excellent additions to your camping and hiking checklist. Keep your solar charger outside your backpack during a day hike and in the evening enjoy an easy power source to keep you and your group running on all cylinders.

Back to the Dust

One major concern when hiking and camping is keeping your garbage as minimal as possible without disrupting the surrounding ecology. This is where compostable products can come into play.

Traveling with compostable cutlery, cups, plates, trays and bowls allows for easy use and mindful discard. It does’t mean you can bury these compostables after use but if one does go astray it will be a lot better than dropping a conventional plastic item.

Using compostable products enables not only re-use but if discarded in a campsite refuse, you know it will go back to the earth a lot faster than other trash.

Walk the Green Walk

If you want to be an Eco-Friendly Expert Explorer then being able to walk-the-green-walk is your mantra. There are many travel bags you can use that signal your undying dedication to the planet you are enjoying. These are specially constructed backpacks and other items made from a variety of recycled or reusable items which include: refurbished bike tubes, sailcloth, organic cotton, bagasse and bamboo all woven or weaved into the perfect green hiking gear.

Other green travel gear to consider might be:
