Choosing Non-Toxic Beauty Products

Posted on November 29, 2017 by Matt Tomasino There have been 0 comments

Conventional beauty product ingredients have been flying under the radar for way too long. Many people are unaware that the contents of their face makeup, body lotion, shampoo and so much more consists of a variety of toxins. These toxins include phthalates, parabens, formaldehyde, propylene glycol, bisphenol A, and a multitude of others, all proven as accumulative dangers to human health.

Choosing non-toxic beauty products that contain ingredients such as citrus, aloe leaf, natural dyes, grape seed extract, and organic shea butter not only means protecting your health and safety but it also means supporting an Eco-friendly, socially conscious planet.

Playing with Heavy Metal

If you do not think there is a slew of toxic ingredients in mainstream beauty products, think again. Several studies have shown a wide variety of heavy metals found in many cosmetics, skincare formulas and toiletries that most people unknowingly apply to their bodies every day.

Environmental Defense, a Canadian environmental group, published the report ‘Heavy Metal Hazard: The Health Risks of Hidden Heavy Metals in Face Makeup’ which cited some disconcerting results. Researchers evaluated close to fifty face makeup items that included foundations, concealers, powders, blushes, bronzers, mascaras, eye liners, eye shadows, and lipsticks or glosses.

Testing revealed high percentages of heavy metals found in these products with some containing:

  • 96% lead
  • 90% beryllium
  • 61 % thallium
  • 51 % cadmium
  • 20 % arsenic

Environmental Defense research reported that,

“each product contained an average of two of the four metals of highest concern (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury), which are designated as toxic in Canada because of proven health concerns. Most of the products also contained an average of four of the eight metals tested (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, nickel, beryllium, thallium, selenium).”

Moving On

The Canadian report is just one example of many studies that have brought to light the dangers of these products. Often these studies are conducted out of the United States due to the enormous fiscal, legal and political pressures put upon researchers by the beauty industry, which does not want its consumers knowing of these toxic ingredients.

Therefore, it is up to you to look for the many natural options available for your beauty product choices. Incidentally, those truly derived from natural, non-toxic sources can finally compete with conventional beauty products offering just as effective results.

It is companies like Organic Essence that not only offer a full spectrum of products that include flower butter skin conditioners and coconut oil based deodorants but also go above and beyond with earth friendly compostable packaging as well. They take their green footprint seriously by offering products that are Eco-friendly both inside and out.

It's Already Taking Hold

The natural beauty market is already beginning to outpace mainstream synthetic choices. From home health and beauty to the professional industry, word of chemical and cruelty-free choices is growing through social media and beauty blogs.

FastCompany reports that,

“Late last year, the research firm Kline & Company reached a similar conclusion, predicting that the synthetic cosmetics sector will decline in the next two years, while the natural skin care segment will grow. Already, the firm found, naturals have grown by 7% in the U.S., compared to a 2% rise in the overall beauty market in 2015.”

There is also Dianne Feinstein, a Democratic senator from California, who stepped up to protect her fellow citizens from the accumulative effects of chemically laced beauty products. Late last year, senator Feinstein introduced the Personal Care Products Safety Act, a bill to strengthen regulation of ingredients in personal care products.

She commented,

“Our skin is our largest organ, and many ingredients contained in these products–whether it be lotion, shampoo, or deodorant–are quickly absorbed by the skin,...There is increasing evidence that certain ingredients in personal care products are linked to a range of health concerns, ranging from reproductive issues, such as fertility problems and miscarriage, to cancer.”

Don’t close your eyes to the sludge of toxic ingredients in conventional beauty products when you can purchase non-toxic choices instead. It is a choice that will not only benefit your health but it will also continue to send a message to Big Corp that you will no longer succumb to subpar, dangerous choices.
