Beware of Tainted Skin Products, Go Green Instead

It might seem that most things you purchase these days need to be checked for all sorts of discrepancies. From genetically modified food that has been linked to health compromises to toxic children's toys disguised as safe to use, navigating these dangers can be daunting. Recently, health and beauty products have once again come to the forefront of being laced with dangerous toxins. This time it is the heavy metal mercury found in skin care products so you may want to take heed.

Dangers of Mercury

The element mercury is often referred to as the slippery silver element found in thermometers, barometers, thermostats, and electrical switches. However, mercury doesn’t always stay contained and has been found to permeate into some foods and even into the air as a vapor. Now it is being linked to finding its way into topical skin care products.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the dangers of mercury accumulation include:

  • Anxiety
  • Excessive shyness
  • Anorexia
  • Sleeping problems
  • Loss of appetite
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Forgetfulness
  • Tremors
  • Changes in vision
  • Changes in hearing

If you have any of these symptoms chronically (all the time) be sure and discuss with your medical or naturopathic doctor. There are ways to use specific medicines or herbs and other natural remedies to “grab” heavy metals like mercury and remove them from your body. In the meantime, avoid mercury heavy foods (large game fish like tuna are loaded) and beware of tainted skin care products; go green instead.

What To Look For

As you age, it can be disconcerting when your skin changes and some discoloration occurs. The cosmetic industry addresses this issue with expensive skin lightening and anti-aging creams. These are advertised as helping reduce the appearance of wrinkles, freckles, and blemishes with some claiming to even help acne. Unfortunately, many, if not all of these mostly synthetically produced (with spurts of “natural” ingredients) creams, oils and the like contain mercury. This is especially disconcerting when it comes to the many adolescents that use these products and potentially accumulate mercury buildup. If you are purchasing and using these products for your bath and spa needs, look at the label.

According to the Environmental Working Group, look for the following which indicates use of mercury:

  • Mercury
  • Hg
  • Mercuric iodide
  • Mercurous chloride
  • Ammoniated mercury
  • Amide chloride of mercury
  • Quicksilver,
  • Cinnabaris (mercury sulfide)
  • Hydrargyri oxydum rubrum (mercury oxide)
  • Mercury iodide
  • Directions to avoid contact with silver, gold, rubber, aluminum, and jewelry could also indicate the presence of mercury

Stay Naturally Free of Mercury

Society has become so far removed from what was once a long list of commonly used natural ingredients that are completely plant-based sourced. Slowly, because of things like toxic mercury found in our food and other products, consumers are becoming smarter about their choices when it comes to their health and safety. Natural skin care products should contain high amounts of natural ingredients such as papaya, citrus, pumpkin, and flower based essences. These products should also be used alongside a majority of plant-based eating as well as herbal and/or vitamin, mineral, enzyme and probiotic supplements. In time, with a good exercise regiment you won't need mercury laden products as your body sheds more deeply accumulated toxins and your skin clears naturally.

Don’t fall prey to glitzy advertising and fad strewn health and beauty fixes. Go simple and embrace more natural remedies that come from organic sourcing. You’ll be doing yourself and your environment a great service.
