Benefits of Reclaimed Wood

You may not realize that you have an option when it comes to purchasing wood products. Rather than blindly obtaining furniture, flooring or other household items derived from virgin timber, you can opt to enhance your home improvement with reclaimed wood.

Reclaimed wood is an Eco-friendly approach that, if used more often, could improve the dwindling natural resource of our planet’s tree population.

Humans March On

It is no real surprise that our forests, especially rainforests, are being decimated for wood, paper and the meat industry (grazing for cattle). Yes, there are many attempts at making sure replantation is administered but it may not keep up with demand.

According to a 2015 report by Time magazine,

“The global tree count has fallen by 46% since the dawn of human civilization.”

This number should be alarming because most of it has happened within the last two centuries, a short amount of time compared to the beginning of man’s footprint.

Also, a research study lead by Thomas Crowther of Yale University, published in the journal Nature, found that,

“The factors driving tree density vary dramatically across the biomes,...But the one feature that stayed consistent across all of them was the negative impact of humans.”

Most humans do not realize that they have enough material items and should now wholly concentrate on how to reduce, recycle, and reuse. Reclaimed wood is refurbishing and reusing old, but still viable lumber.

Reclaimed Sources

A lot of reclaimed wood began to appear as high end furniture art pieces catered to the Eco-conscious, ultra-wealthy. Fortunately, like-minded middle-class individuals took notice and began to offer reclaimed wood into the mainstream.

There are many sources of this reusable commodity which includes the remainder of old wood from:

  • Storm damaged trees
  • Razed structures like barns, public buildings, retired mills,
  • Crates
  • Flooring
  • Furniture
  • Fencing
  • Gymnasiums
  • Ships
  • Pallets
  • Bowling alleys
  • Amusement parks

The Eco-Edge

As reclaimed wood becomes more available, choosing it when you can could be a big win for the environment.

Some of the reasons to seek out this practical approach means:

  • Saving energy (it takes way less to refurbish than to cut and transport)
  • Reducing virgin timber harvesting (reclaimed wood is stronger than virgin wood)
  • Eliminates pollution caused from landfill burning
  • Reduces fossil fuel use

Reclaimed wood will bring character to any home. It comes with an embedded history and does not conform to a perfect design. Reclaimed wood has indentations, natural aged coloring and other scars of wear and tear however it will hold great visual individuality that your guests will inevitably fawn over. Plus, it is often a wood like oak or cherry that can easily be treated with paint, stain and lubrication without damage, easily holding its unique appearance.

Supporting this level of reuse is to put into motion an awareness that can surpass just reclaimed wood and open up the possibility for reclaiming other materials.

We live on a planet that offers so much, yet wealthy countries like America have turned themselves into disposable societies. From plastic bags and water bottles to cell phones and wood products it is now or never to reduce our throwaway, landfill amassing attitude.

Reclaimed wood is just another step toward using the vast amounts of long life products so many are used to disposing just to get something new. Look for reclaimed wood opportunities for your next furniture and home decor purchases.
