| Upon the decree of the Hungarian Government, the Ministry for Environment decided to introduce an eco-label in 1993. The objective is to direct producers and distributors to produce and distribute environmentally sound products (goods and services) and to inform consumers on the environmental features of the goods or services. Products that are especially environmentally compatible can be awarded the eco-label.
An award may be given for products which: . fulfil well the same function as the other products having similar use; . during their whole life cycle impose less environmental load than similar products (consid-ering raw materials, their manufacture, use and disposal); . reduce the environmental load in other ways thus contributing significantly to environmental conservation without reducing significantly their fitness for use and maintaining safety. Excluded are: . mineral raw materials, . food products and beverages, . pharmaceuticals and medical products, . special rarities.
In the eco-labelling process participate: . The Assessing Committee (AC), with the representatives of competent ministries, environmental organisations, scientific, economic, standardisation, consumer protection and health care institutions, . Ministry for Environment (Ministry), . Hungarian Eco-Labelling Organisation (HELO).
